i38 - The Grand Final

The i38 TF2 Tournament has finally drawn to a close, and after over 20 games in 48 hours between the 6 teams in attendance, as many predicted Team YoYoTech and Power Gaming met on the Main Stage at Newbury to decide the winner of the largest prize stash ever to be offered for TF2 at a Multiplay event. With both teams at the very top of competitive TF2, it was widely predicted that they would reach the final, but not many people could have foreseen how great the contest would be.
After narrowly losing in the Double Elimination Upper Final yesterday in a difficult game on Gravel Pit, YoYoTech had to win both maps in today’s Grand Final in order to take home the 6 Fractal Newton R2 900W PSUs and prize money on offer, to add to the Fractal Define R2 Cases that every player in the Final was awarded. Beginning on Badlands, Power started strongly, taking the first round and looking to break the curse of yesterday’s game – winning one point, then losing the next. However, it simply wasn’t to be and YoYoTech came back stronger than ever by playing far more aggressively, and with some superb Demo work from numlocked and clever play from boomeh, zerox and SKiNNie, the team took a 3-1 lead.
Within the large crowd watching, many of the TF2 players spectating assumed that from such a strong position and having beaten Power yesterday, YYT would continue to play aggressively, dominate middle and leisurely count down the clock before the real battle began on Gravel Pit. However, the men from Finland (and Sweden!) had other ideas, and quickly adapted to the YYT aggression by going through the Canyon. Some great Scout play from wltrs and vaxjo managed to bring down Springer, and snifz and Moose stepped up to the mark by both taking down their Soldier counterparts. Going from strength to strength, the team then managed to win the next two rounds, bringing the score back to a level 3-3.
With around 10 minutes to go, the match continued at a relentless pace, with both teams picking up a round each, as well as providing the crowd with some spectacular, nail-biting defences, nice pushes and some great frags. With only a few minutes left, Power Gaming used the strong teamwork they’ve displayed throughout the tournament to push towards the final YoYoTech point and eventually capped with seconds to spare.
For the spectators, the two sides couldn’t have produced a better Final to highlight just how good competitive TF2 is. It attracted a large crowd around the Main Stage, a crowd who were by far the most vocal of any i38 Final I’ve seen, and many thanks should go to casters Jay Atkins (former QuadV representative) and Xman (Manager of TCM and former ^wotr^ leader) for adding to the atmosphere by providing some great coverage of all the action.
Huge thanks go to Multiplay for supporting the TF2 scene here, and Fractal for generously donating some really nice prizes. Shout-outs should also go to Mole and Tapley for running the tournament so well, and all that’s really left to say is that on behalf of the TF2 community, I hope even more teams can make it to i39 to continue to expand this fantastic game.
